Biking Skills and Safety Unit Coming Soon!

We will be starting a three week biking unit in Physical Education class beginning on Tuesday, September 6th.  Over the summer, we applied to receive a trailer full of bikes as part of the Kohl’s Kids Bike Smart program run by Local Motion.  The secure trailer is filled with 45 kid’s bikes and all of the needed equipment, including helmets.  There are only four trailers that service the entire state and we’re very fortunate that Founders Memorial School was one of the few schools selected.

Day in the life: Lea Davison

I wanted to share an interesting article I found about a friend of mine named Lea Davison. She is a professional mountain biker and two-time Olympian from Jericho, Vermont. I have known Lea for many years and I invited her to come to an all school assembly at Founders a few years ago where she gave an amazing presentation. You can check out the article that describes what she has been doing lately during the shutdown and also visit the post about her cool visit to Founders here. It sounds like she has been getting out for some fresh air with walks and rides and has also been doing strengthening exercises at home, like many of you have been doing.

History of April Fools’ Day

This is a fun hoax from April Fool’s Day in 1957.

Here is some information about the history of April Fool’s Day from a piece I found in a newspaper piece written a few years ago.

Some historians believe that April Fools’ Day has its origins in ancient Rome, with a festival known as “Hilaria.” Usually celebrated March 25, according to William Smith’s “Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities,” Hilaria was a day for games, masquerades and generally whiling away the day with relentless mocking — not even local magistrates were immune.

Recent Ninja Warrior Training

Over the course of the last couple of weeks we have been working on a Ninja Warrior Training unit in Physical Education class.  Students learned about the code of conduct, a basis of understanding for how students are expected to conduct themselves throughout the unit.  The code of conduct ties directly to Standard 4 of the PE National Standards that covers personal responsibility, working with others, and safety.  The code of conduct includes challenge by choice, the expectation that all students will work hard and try their best, and support other students, among other things.

The Ninja Warrior Training also covers Standards 1 (motor skills and movement patterns, balance, and stability), Standard 3 (fitness concepts) and Standard 5 (recognizing the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction).
